What is dyslexia and how does it affect people? Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). [^2^] Dyslexia is not due to problems with intelligence, hearing or vision. [^2^] Dyslexia is a result of individual differences in areas of the brain that process language. [^2^] People with dyslexia may have trouble with:
Phonological processing (the manipulation of sounds) [^5^]
Spelling words [^2^]
Reading quickly [^3^]
Writing words [^3^]
Sounding out words in the head [^3^]
Pronouncing words when reading aloud [^3^]
Understanding what they read [^3^]
Remembering the sequence of things [^2^]
Learning a foreign language [^2^]
Doing math word problems [^2^]
Dyslexia can affect people of any age, but it is more common in children. Signs of dyslexia can be difficult to recognize before your child enters school, but some early clues may indicate a problem. Once your child reaches school age, your child's teacher may be the first to notice a problem. Severity varies, but the condition often becomes apparent as a child starts learning to read. [^2^]
Dyslexia is believed to be caused by the interaction of genetic and environmental factors. Some cases run in families. Dyslexia that develops due to a traumatic brain injury, stroke, or dementia is sometimes called \\\"acquired dyslexia\\\" or alexia. The underlying mechanisms of dyslexia result from differences within the brain's language processing. Dyslexia is diagnosed through a series of tests of memory, vision, spelling, and reading skills. Dyslexia is separate from reading difficulties caused by hearing or vision problems or by insufficient teaching or opportunity to learn. [^2^] 0efd9a6b88
