How to Generate and Activate SSH Keys for Bitvise SSH Server 17
Bitvise SSH Server is a powerful and secure software that allows you to access your Windows server remotely via SSH. It supports various authentication methods, including password, public key, and Kerberos. In this article, we will show you how to generate and activate SSH keys for Bitvise SSH Server 17 using the built-in keygen tool.
Step 1: Download and Install Bitvise SSH Server 17
The first step is to download and install Bitvise SSH Server 17 on your Windows server. You can get the latest version from the official website: https://www.bitvise.com/ssh-server-download. Follow the installation wizard and accept the license agreement. You can choose the default settings or customize them according to your preferences.
Step 2: Run the Keygen Tool
After installing Bitvise SSH Server 17, you need to run the keygen tool to generate a pair of SSH keys: a public key and a private key. The public key will be stored on the server and used to verify your identity, while the private key will be stored on your client machine and used to encrypt and decrypt your data. To run the keygen tool, go to Start > All Programs > Bitvise SSH Server > Easy SSH Keygen.
The keygen tool will open a window where you can choose the type and size of your keys. You can select RSA or ECDSA as the key type, and 2048 or 4096 bits as the key size. The larger the key size, the more secure your connection will be, but it will also take longer to generate and use. We recommend using RSA with 2048 bits for most cases.
Click on the Generate button to start creating your keys. You will see a progress bar and some random characters on the screen. This is normal and means that the tool is generating entropy for your keys. You can move your mouse or type on your keyboard to speed up the process. When the keys are ready, you will see a message saying \"Key pair generated\".
Step 3: Save Your Keys
The next step is to save your keys in a safe location. You can choose where to save them by clicking on the Browse buttons next to the Public Key File and Private Key File fields. You can also change the file names if you want. By default, the public key file will have a .pub extension and the private key file will have a .ppk extension.
We recommend saving your public key file in the C:\\Program Files\\Bitvise SSH Server\\Keys folder on your server, and saving your private key file in a secure folder on your client machine. You should also make a backup copy of your keys in case you lose them or need to reinstall Bitvise SSH Server.
After choosing where to save your keys, click on the Save button to store them. You will see a message saying \"Key pair saved\".
Step 4: Activate Your Public Key on the Server
The final step is to activate your public key on the server so that you can use it to log in via SSH. To do this, you need to open the Bitvise SSH Server Control Panel by going to Start > All Programs > Bitvise SSH Server > Control Panel. In the control panel, click on the Edit button next to Virtual Accounts.
In the Virtual Accounts window, click on the Add button to create a new account. Enter a username and password for your account, and check the box next to Enable account. Then, click on the Login tab and check the box next to Public key authentication. Click on the Add button next to Authorized public keys.
In the Authorized Public Keys window, click on the Import button and browse to the location where you saved your public key file. Select it and click Open. You will see your public key details in the window. Click OK to add it to your account.
Click OK again to save your account settings. You will see your account listed in the Virtual Accounts window. Click OK once more to close it.
